What is Absinthe?
Absinthe, a.k.a 'The Green Fairy' is a popular liquor made from a blend of herbs including wormwood. It was very popular in the 19th century and has been immortalized in recent films such as Moulin Rouge and From Hell.
What's the difference between Absinth and Absinthe?
Absinthe is the French spelling while Absinth is the Czech spelling.
Why was Absinthe banned?
Absinthe was banned because of growing hysteria and fear about its special effects. Evidence indicated that wormwood in large quantities could injure and in extreme cases even kill an individual; this information was extended towards Absinthe. By the early part of the 20th century, prohibitionist feelings had overtaken western culture and many countries started banning Absinthe.
Is Absinthe still illegal?
That depends on which country you live in. In the European Union, recent court challenges have allowed Absinthe back into the bars across the continent. In Canada, the Czech Republic and Spain, abinsthe was never made illegal. In the US, it is legal to own or purchase absinthe but illegal to sell or distill it.
How do you drink Absinthe?
There are a variety of popular options including ‘louching’ which entails water and sugar, the flame method which is when you soak a sugar cube in absinthe and set it on fire or you can drink it just as it is. It all depends on individual taste, but we suggest trying out all these fun and unique rituals and recipes.
Do I have to buy an Absinthe spoon?
No. While it certainly contributes to the entire experience and it’s a little more convenient, you can make do with a large fork if necessary.
